The Interclub League was originally created in 1980. It was created to provide young curlers with an opportunity to experience competitive curling and have an enjoyable time doing it. The league plays a key role in the development and growth of youth curling in the GTA.
The Interclub League was originally created in 1980. It was created to provide young curlers with an opportunity to experience competitive curling and have an enjoyable time doing it. Participation in the league is open to any club in the general GTA area, taking into consideration distance to travel and ability to host league games at an appropriate time. The league plays a key role in the development and growth of youth curling in the GTA.
Experience indicates that the curlers do take these games seriously and the range of curling expertise varies greatly. Inexperienced teams should be encouraged to enter the league and we have found that most teams entering the league have an exaggerated view of how competitive the league really is. Competition in the Interclub League is not much different than would be found in a normal Bantam bonspiel with some good teams and some very inexperienced teams. The nature of the competition provides the opportunity for young curlers to compete in serious games against teams from around the GTA and exposes them to different curling venues. Both of these aspects help prepare them for this type of game environment if they wish to continue in more competitive curling. At its base though, the Interclub league is intended to be an entertaining and fun filled experience which allows curlers to sample a new level of curling that they wouldn’t see in their own club programs. For many it is the springboard to playing in Tour and Slam events along with Provincial play downs.
For the 2019-2020 season we will continue to play league games on Sundays, either in the morning or late afternoon. There may be one or two Saturday games if necessary due to lack of Sunday ice time. Teams will play a 10 game schedule against teams from their Region. The season will end with a Finals Day which all teams playing in the league will be able to participate in (there will be two dates to accommodate all teams). Trophies, prizes for all curlers and pizza will all be part of this two game event which will see teams from the different regions facing each other based on regular season rankings.
New Ontario Law for Concussion Awareness (Rowan’s Law) – What is it all about?
CONCUSSION AWARENESS – ROWAN’S LAW
Rowan’s Law was named for Rowan Stringer, a high school rugby player from Ottawa, who died in the spring of 2013 from a condition known as second impact syndrome (swelling of the brain caused by a subsequent injury that occurred before a previous injury healed). Rowan is believed to have experienced three concussions over six days while playing rugby. She had a concussion but didn’t know her brain needed time to heal. Neither did her parents, teachers or coaches.
In July 2019 the Ontario Government passed legislation with new rules requiring the review of Concussion Awareness Resources and Concussion Codes of Conduct. It is now mandatory for Sport Organizations to:

What does this mean to players in the Interclub League? All participants under the age of 26, coaches, instructors and league officials must read and sign off on Rowan’s Law Code of Conduct before stepping onto the ice. You are required to confirm your review of a Concussion Awareness Resource with each sport organization with which you register. This will need to be done annually. This competition will be open for youth curlers who are in high school and who curl recreationally at their local curling club. Experience indicates that the range of curling expertise varies greatly and that most teams entering interclub competition have an exaggerated view of how competitive the league play is. Although this will be a bonspiel format instead of a league, the principles will remain the same. At its base, interclub competition is intended to be entertaining and a fun-filled experience which allows curlers to sample a new level of curling they wouldn’t see in their own club programs. For many, interclub competition is a springboard to more competitive play such as Slam and Tour events and provincial playdowns. Competitive curlers who wish to play in this league are encouraged to play with inexperienced curlers from their home club. This will enhance the opportunities for club curlers who have yet to compete outside of their own club.
BONSPIEL INFORMATION
To be held on 3 Saturdays at 3 different clubs during the curling season. Each team will have 2 games on each day and this will be a points bonspiel format.
Week 1 – December 10 @ Tam Heather
Week 2 – January 14 and 21 @ High Park (teams will only be scheduled on one of these days)
Week 3 – March 25 @ Dixie Curling Club – FINALS DAY
(Weeks 1 and 2 will be preliminary games that result in seeding for the final day)
Cost: $300.00
Meals: A meal will be provided on the final day and will include a pizza lunch, drinks, and dessert. Teams will be responsible for their own meals and snacks on Weeks 1 and 2.
Maximum 24 Teams – the host clubs will be guaranteed 1 entry from their club. Other teams will be accepted on a first come first served basis. Once payment is received, a confirmation email will be sent to the team contact with information about waivers for each of the clubs.
