Our History
The TCA Men’s Championship carries a storied history within the world of curling, dating back to its inauguration in January 1896. The journey to this landmark year included a shift in the game’s format. Originally, curling in Toronto featured eight-man teams, each member throwing a single rock. However, as the sport evolved, the ‘Single Rink’ format gained popularity in the mid-1800s.
In 1895, the idea of a championship took root, culminating in the inaugural Single Rink Championship of Toronto in January 1896. This tournament consisted of twenty-two ends played on natural ice with corn brooms. Fortunately for the curlers, sweeping was prohibited until the rock crossed the middle line!
The first champions of this event were the Rennie Rink, representing the Caledonia Curling Club in 1896. Early sponsorships were held by Hiram Walker, succeeded by the Canada Life Assurance Company in 1906. For the ensuing eighty years, curlers from various city clubs convened each January, competing for the coveted title of “Canada Life Champions.”
Over time, sponsorships transitioned. Investors Group supported the event from 1995 to 1997, and in 1998, a determined group of curlers from the Weston Golf & Country Club stepped up. Brick Brewing assumed sponsorship from 1999 to 2001, followed by Johnson Controls, which took the reins from 2002 to 2009 under the banner of the TCA Energizer Men’s Bonspiel. In 2010, Goldline Curling Supplies proudly assumed the role of Title sponsor, marking another chapter in the enduring legacy of this prestigious event.
The TCA Men’s Championship, with its roots tracing back to the late 19th century, stands as a testament to the enduring tradition of curling in Toronto. From the early days of eight-man teams to the modern era, this championship has evolved while preserving its core values. Each chapter of its history reflects the passion and dedication of curlers who have competed for the prestigious title of “Canada Life Champions” and now “TCA Goldline Champions”. As the tournament continues to thrive and adapt, it remains a cherished tradition in the world of curling, honoring its storied past while looking forward to a promising future. are fully understood.
